Jan is an intriguing, prolific multi-instrumentalist from Germany. He’s perhaps best known for his work as We Deserve This, which has been releasing post-metal / post-rock music since 2006, building up a back catalogue with over 100 items and a substantial loyal following. In more recent years he’s branched out into piano music, releasing his distinctive compositions under his own name and winning high praise from the BBC’s Steven McCauley. His album Quantum Theory really caught my ear when it first came out in August 2018 – it’s constantly surprising, upending your expectations without ever being difficult.
Autism is a fascinating piece that was released on Piano Day 2019. I’m intrigued by the title and how that might relate to the musical material: the mix of extremely regular rhythm with the off-beat accents, the contrast between the simple formal structure and the lack of formal resolution, and the contrast between the block and broken chords sections.
